This reading is designed to familiarize students with some of the many macromolecules found in nature, setting the stage for the segments concerning Linneaus Dorman. It also returns to the natural polymers that inspired Wallace Carothers to investigate macromolecular chemistry in the first place. It is important to reinforce the idea that many natural materials are polymers, as the word "polymer" is usually associated with synthetic materials in popular parlance.

      Relevant National Science Education Standards

Physical Science — Molecular structures are presented for most of the polymers discussed, and the importance of enzymes in chemical reactions in the body is discussed.

Life Science — The role of DNA in heredity is discussed.

      Next: Meet Linneaus Dorman
