ionic bond - when one atom has a positive charge and another atom has a negative charge, the opposite charges on these atoms cause the two atoms to be attracted to each other. This attraction can bind the two atoms strongly together, forming a molecule. This is called an ionic bond, because the two atoms involved are ions. Salts contain ionic bonds. Unlike a covalent bond, an ionic bond does not involve sharing of electrons by the two bound atoms.
