nanometer - a unit of length, equal to one billionth of a meter, or 10-9 meters. The wavelengths of ultraviolet radiation and visible light are short enough to be measured in nanometers. Most of the UV radiation that reaches the earth from the sun has wavelengths 100-400 nanometers (nm) and visible light has wavelengths of 400-700 nm.
