polymer - when Wallace Carothers began his research, the name polymer, ancient Greek for "many parts", was given to materials such as cotton, rubber, and some new synthetic materials. The chemical nature of these materials was not well understood. Carothers helped prove that polymers are macromolecules, giant molecules made from thousands of atoms. Today the words polymer and macromolecule are used interchangably.
