      < Back | Home | Student Version | Next >

This reading is a straightforward discussion of measurement techniques for analyzing atmospheric samples, especially gas chromatography. You may choose to illustrate the concept of chromatographic separation more vividly using a simple paper chromatograhy demonstration or activity. On a more fundamental level, the main chemical concepts which can be reinforced with the reading are mixtures, separation, concentration, and measurement.

      Relevant National Science Education Standards

Unifying Concepts and Processes — The reading is all about measurement of trace gases in the atmosphere. The data obtained from such measurements is vital evidence in determining the causes of ozone loss.

Earth and Space Science — The reading deals with measurement of human-made substances which disturb the natural geochemical cycles in the atmosphere.

Science in Personal and Social Perspectives — The reading involves an environmental quality issue which is also a human-induced health hazard, plus the use of science in overcoming this global challenge.
