Although nylon is considered the crowning accomplishment in the life of Wallace Carothers, it was just part of a richer tapestry of his science. Developing synthetic fibers was not at all on his mind when he joined DuPont in 1928. He was more interested in pure science, specifically investigating the new macromolecular theory of Hermann Staudinger. Beginning with this investigation, his research unfolded in many different directions. One thing led to another in the manner shown on the chart below.
