Julian Hill reenacting the 1930 discovery of cold drawingcirca 1950Gift of Joe Labovsky. |
When polymer fiber is first spun, the molecules are folded up randomly within the filament, and it stretches easily. Hill discovered that if he stretched the fiber to about four times its original length, the molecules would rearrange themselves and line up neatly. After this process, cold-drawing, the fiber is stronger for its diameter than steel.
