The team began by testing small (less than one ounce) samples of more than eighty materials
that seemed likely to possess the desired properties for an artificial fiber. This report,
based on journal articles, patents, and original research, reviews the properties of most types
of polymers known at the time. Although only polyamides were commercially developed during the
project, most of the other classes of polymers investigated eventually found applications in
products ranging from paint to contact lenses.
