Julian W. Hill (left) and Herman Mark (right) at CHF's Polymer Pioneers Symposium, October 30, 1987.

In this 1987 photograph, Hill, a key member of Carothers' research team and the discoverer of cold drawing (a technique of strengthening polymer fibers by stretching), reminisces with Mark, another founder of polymer chemistry. Mark participated in the crucial macromolecule debates of the 1920s and '30s and pioneered the use of X-ray crystallography in studying polymer structure. He is the subject of a CHF oral history.
