The nylon ribbon was broken into chips and fed into the hopper of the spinning unit, where it was melted, pumped, metered, and filtered before passing through the spinneret to form filaments. While molten, the polymer was blanketed with 99.99% pure nitrogen to prevent it from oxidizing in the spinning unit.
