          In melt spinning, the newly spun yarn was free of moisture. At low speeds (less than 1000 feet per minute), the moisture in the air stabilized it, but with the increased speeds that came with scaling up, the dry yarn did not have time to absorb enough moisture from the air to stabilize and tended to slip off the bobbins. Researchers solved this problem by running the nylon yarn through a steam-filled pipe, allowing speeds of up to 3300 feet per minute.
