Hoffmann, We Have a Problem:
Conclusion
Felix Hoffmann, Arthur Eichengrün, and their colleagues saw aspirin relieve pain without causing severe stomach trouble. They saw aspirin reduce swelling. And they saw aspirin reduce fevers. From what they had seen, they concluded they had produced a potentially wonderful drug that could be used for the benefit of humanity.
Communication
The last thing that had to be done was to communicate the results of the experiments, so the whole world could benefit from their results. For the Bayer Company, communicating the results meant bringing a brand new drug to market and offering it to consumers suffering from aches and pains. After some initial stalling on the part of Eichengrün's boss Heinrich Dreser, who mistakenly thought aspirin might damage the heart, Hoffmann's solution to the problem of arthritis pain became a multibillion dollar industry. Even today, aspirin is the biggest selling drug worldwide.
