carboxylic acid — a carbon-based acid whose molecules contain oxygen
(O), carbon (C), and
hydrogen (H) atoms arranged in the manner you see below.

A carboxylic acid, where R can
be any atom or group of atoms.
These compounds are acids, so the hydrogen atom can easily separate and join a nearby
water molecule:
