    Basics of Bacterial Resistance

    This reading can be used to three different ends. First, it can be used to explore evolutionary dynamics, how evolutionary pressures and natural selection cause organisms to evolve. In this reading, that means looking at how our use of antibiotics has placed an evolutionary pressure on bacteria to become resistant. In this capacity, it may be helpful to use this reading along with Evolution and Disease.

    Second, the reading can be used to look at the mechanics of bacterial genetics, that is, how DNA is shared between bacteria. This can be used in discussing the basics of cell division and reproduction, as well as basic molecular genetics and DNA science.

    Third, this reading can be used to educate students in how to be responsible consumers of antibiotics and antibiotic-containing products. The reading includes a list of things that consumers should know and do to help curb the overuse of antibiotics in order to slow the development of resistant strains. For example, the students are told not to ask for antibiotics when suffering from colds or influenza.

      Unifying Concepts and Processes — The reading examines the biosystems in which antibiotic resistance develops and several models of how the development of resistance occurs, and explores some of the evidence supporting the models.

      Physical Science — The reading examines the behavior of matter in living systems as it pertains to antibiotic resistance.

      Life Science — The reading is concerned with the cell as well as the behavior of matter in living systems.

      Science and Technology — The reading involves the science behind the technology of overcoming antibiotic resistance and how antibiotic technology misused can lead to resistant bacterial strains.

      Science and Personal and Social Perpectives — The reading is focused on personal and community health, a human-induced hazard, and the role of science and technology in meeting this challenge.

      5.4 The reading involves the science behind the technology of overcoming antibiotic resistance and how antibiotic technology misused can lead to resistant bacterial strains.
      5.5 The functioning of bacterial cells is central to the reading.
      5.6 The reading examines the biochemical behavior of antibiotics in bacteria.
