| History Inside and Out The Chemical Heritage Foundation is located in the heart of Philadelphias Independence National Historical Park, just two blocks from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Philadelphia is rich in the history of the chemical and molecular sciences and industries. The first U.S. chemical society was founded here in 1789. Some 20 years earlier, Benjamin Rush was named the first professor of chemistry in America, at the College of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania). By 1899 the companies that would eventually become SmithKline Beecham, PQ Corporation, and Wyeth Laboratories had long been established. CHFs facilities are a blend of old and new, history and modernity. From the original 1865 First National Bank building, designed by the same architect who designed Philadelphias grand City Hall, to the added 1953 structure, to our new state-of-the-art Ullyot Meeting Hall (completed in 2002), CHF is the perfect setting for displaying the artifacts of chemistrys past and for educating a new generation about the vital role the chemical and molecular sciences have played in the development of modern society. CHF welcomes your visit. Also, our facilities are now available for you to rent for your next meeting, conference, or other event.
