Using the Images on This Site

The images that appear on the Chemical Achievers Web site come from a variety of sources, including the Chemical Heritage Foundation’s own image archives.

Classroom Use:
This Web site, and the book on which it is based, were designed to help chemistry teachers bring the human face of chemistry into the classroom—to put a face to the chemical law, principle, or process. All the images on this site may be used by educators and students for non-profit educational purposes in the classroom without requesting special permission.

Other Uses:
For uses outside the classroom context (nonprofit, commercial, and personal uses; individuals and organizations; and Web, print, or any other format), permission must be requested in writing and fees may apply. CHF can only grant permission to use images from its own collections; it cannot grant permission to use images from other collections (see below). Fees will be assessed by the CHF image archivist on an individual basis. You may also request reproductions of any of the images from the CHF collections; the image archivist can accommodate most formats and fees may apply.

Images from the CHF Collections:
Any image labeled “Chemical Heritage Foundation Collections” belongs to the CHF image archives. To request permission to use CHF images or reproductions of CHF images, please send your request via e-mail to archivist@chemheritage.org. Please be sure to include the following in your request:

• The Web address (URL) for the page on the Chemical Achievers site where the image appears (cut and paste from the address bar of your browser), e.g., http://www.chemheritage.org/classroom/chemach/gases/haber.html

• A brief description of the image, “Fritz Haber sketch dated 1911”

• The purpose for which you want to use the image

• A brief description of your organization and its activities

• If requesting a reproduction, the format you desire (digital, print, slide, etc.)

Please allow 4–6 weeks for processing. Requests to fulfill orders in less than 4–6 weeks will be considered rush orders and may incur additional charges.

Please note that, in many cases, donors of materials that are housed at the Chemical Heritage Foundation image archives have either retained the copyright to their unpublished materials or did not own copyright to the donated items. According to the United States copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code), permission to publish must be obtained from the owner of the copyright before publication. This responsibility falls to the user, not CHF.

Images from Other Collections:
Many of the images on this site are used courtesy of other organizations or individuals. CHF cannot grant you permission to use these images. You must contact the organization or individual specified in the courtesy line of the image caption directly. Chemical Achievers features many images from the Edgar Fahs Smith Collection of the University of Pennsylvania Library. Its Web site, where you can request permission to use the images in their collection, is http://dewey.library.upenn.edu/sceti/smith/index.cfm?nav=smith. For all other images sources, please use a Web search or other standard research tools to find contact information. We regret that we are not able to provide contact information for all our sources.
