A New Year
December 31, 2009 | Tom Tritton
Tonight is New Year’s Eve. Traditionally we party to excess, anticipate a long day of college football tomorrow, and scrawl a resolution or two, later to be broken. Sheesh, this is civilization?
Setting aside bacchanalia and sports, I still like the idea of resolutions. Mine for the coming year:
- To be grateful that the world’s economies are beginning to recover.
- To be mindful that many still lack jobs, homes, and security.
- To remember that a variety of society’s urgent challenges—sickness, hunger, energy, environment, materials—are only soluble with creative uses of molecules. Hence the importance of CHF’s mission to inspire a passion for chemistry, highlight chemistry’s role in meeting current social challenges, and preserve the story of chemistry across the centuries.
