A Flurry of Applications

Ship of Fellows

Hooray, the craziness is over—the deadline for fellowship applications has come and gone. Now it’s time to take stock of the situation. Last year we had 35 total applications for all of our fellowships. Three days before the deadline we had only 7 in hand. I was a bit apprehensive, but I knew that a flood of applications usually comes in at the last minute. This year was no exception, and when it was all said and done, we ended up with 34 applications total.

It is interesting to note that of those 34 applications, 23 people heard about our fellowships either from colleagues or from having had personal contact with CHF in the past. Only 11 applied because they found out about it from seeing our notice on a listserv or by visiting a Web site with the notice posted on it. One possible way to encourage more applications from listserv or Web site notices is to be clearer about the kinds of research we support. Nevertheless, I am pleased with the results. We seem to be sustaining interest in our fellowship program and continue to attract applications of a high quality.

Now comes the hard part for us; eliciting comments on all the various applications and then having our peer-review committee go through the applications with a very critical eye. After about a 4- to 6-week review period, the committee will meet and make the selections. We will select around 8 from the 19 long-term applications and around 5 to 6 from our 14 short-term applications to be our 2010–2011 class of the Beckman Center here at CHF. Those are pretty good odds, but as happy as we will be to welcome our new fellows here, it is never easy to tell others that we will not be able to support them this year.

To all of you that applied, thanks for your interest and stay tuned for the results. Float On!
