Background note

John M. Weiss was born in Philadelphia on March 11, 1885. After receiving his B.S. from the University of Pennsylvania, Weiss became a prominent chemical engineer. In 1905 Weiss began his career with the Barrett Company as a research chemist. He quickly made his way through the ranks of the company, and by 1921 he was the director of development. In 1923 Weiss began a 19-year stint as the president and treasurer of Weiss and Downs, Inc., a chemical-engineering consulting firm. In 1943 John M. Weiss and Company was established. He remained a senior partner of this company until his death in 1963. His primary interests included acids, maleic anhydride, and synthetic phenol. Weiss was a member of many professional associations, including the Electrochemical Society and the Association of Consulting Chemists and Chemical Engineers.
