‘This Colledge belongs to the Society of Physicians, who were constituted a Body Corporate in K. Hen: 8th's time, & have since had sever.l Acts of Parliamt. in their Favour. For the safety of the Subject & encouragemnt. to the Science of Physick, none can practice Physick within the City or 7 Miles thereof, without a Licence under the Seal of this Colledge; They have Authority to search Apothecarys Shops, to see if their Drugs are good & Compositions well made up. They can make By Laws for their own Governmnt. & can impose a Fine or Imprisonmt. on Quacks or other Offenders. On 2 Days of the Week Fellows of this Colledge in their turns sit in the Publick Hall where great Numbrs. of Poor resort to them & are direct'd gratis in what manner to prepare things easy & proper for their Cure, at their own Houses, & as for those Medecines wch/ require more Art in makng. up, they re directd. to the Dispensary belong. to this Colledge, where the best Preparations are Dispensd. to them at low Prices.’
