The directors of the Gunpowder Administration (established in 1775) published this book on the cultivation of saltpeter, undoubtedly written by Lavoisier, in the hopes of fostering a domestic supply of artificially produced saltpeter.  Cultivation of saltpeter was not much practiced in France, except near Lavoisier’s ancestral town of Villier-Cotterets.
