“Never take no for an answer.”
Madeleine Jacobs, executive director and CEO of the American Chemical Society, tells the story of how she got her first job at Chemical & Engineering News ... by walking right in and asking for it.
Jacobs received a B.S. in chemistry and an honorary doctor of science from George Washington University. She has been executive director and CEO of ACS since January 2004. She served as managing editor and editor-in-chief of Chemical & Engineering News from 1993 to 2003. She worked for Chemical & Engineering News from 1969 to 1972, and then had a 21-year career in science writing, journalism, and public affairs. Jacobs serves on the board of directors of several not-for-profit scientific organizations and speaks frequently on the public understanding of science, gender equity in the sciences, and employment issues.
