“Seek mentors from a lot of different areas of science.”

Rebecca Guenard

Chemists can be narrowly focused, says Rebecca Guenard. In a field that encourages scientists to follow a predefined path, she encourages young women to take a wider view and realize it’s okay to take a nontraditional route.

After receiving a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry Guenard became a lecturer at Temple University. Originally she intended to seek a tenure-track position, but in the process of conducting research and writing proposals she realized that she loved sharing interesting stories that incorporate chemistry. Guenard left Temple and now works as a freelance science writer.
