Revolutionary Tools: Instruments and the Transformation of the Chemical Sciences

Revolutionary Tools, an exhibition on 20th-century chemical instrumentation at the Chemical Heritage Foundation, displayed over 15 instruments, including Arnold Beckman’s groundbreaking pH meter, a Beckman IR-1, and a prototype Perkin Model 12 infrared spectrophotometer. Revolutionary Tools chronicled the marriage of chemistry and modern electronics that transformed chemical science and technology and had a profound impact on knowledge, industry, and health.

The exhibition contained instruments from the Beckman Coulter Historical Collection and CHF’s collections, including the Bodensee Collection recently acquired from PerkinElmer Instruments. Created by CHF, the exhibition was made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation.
