| In January 1982 the Chemical Heritage Foundation had no collections, no staff, no programs, and no facilities. It consisted only of a simple letter of agreement, committing the American Chemical Society to match in-place academic activity of the University of Pennsylvania with a $50,000 grant each year, for three years. Today CHF is widely recognized as the central place for the central science. With an endowment exceeding $130 million and a $10-million operating budget, CHF has a unique ability to treasure the past; our challenge and our opportunity is to educate the present and inspire the future.
