PHILADELPHIA, PA1 May 2009The Chemists’ Club of New York and the Chemical Heritage Foundation have announced that Zsolt Rumy, chairman, president, and CEO of Zoltek Companies, a leading carbon fiber company, will receive The Chemists’ Club’s Winthrop-Sears Medal for 2009. The award will be presented at a dinner on Thursday, 14 May 2009, at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia, as part of CHF’s annual Heritage Day celebration.
“The innovation Zsolt Rumy demonstrated in creating and growing Zoltek is an inspiration to all of us in science-related industries,” said Eric Borgstedt, President of the Chemists’ Club. “It is because of the vision and direction of people like Zsolt Rumy that carbon fiber will rise to even greater heights.”
About Zsolt Rumy
Zsolt Rumy has been a leader in the carbon fiber industry for more than 20 years. He founded Zoltek Companies in 1975, and in 1988 he entered the carbon fiber business with the goal of producing and marketing carbon fibers as a low-cost but high-performance reinforcement for composites used as primary building materials in everyday commercial products. As chairman, president, and CEO of Zoltek, Rumy continues to guide the firm’s successful growth today.
About the Winthrop-Sears Medal
The Winthrop-Sears Award was established by the Chemists’ Club in 1970 to recognize individuals who, by the entrepreneurial action, have contributed to the vitality of the chemical industry and the betterment of mankind. The award is named in honor of two of America's earliest chemical entrepreneurs, John Winthrop, Jr., and John Sears. Previous recipients of the Winthrop-Sears Award include renowned industry figures such as Robert L. Gore, Jon M. Huntsman, Ralph Landau, James Mack, George Rosenkranz, Harold A. Sorgenti, and Alejandro Zaffaroni. Last year's winner was Haldor Topsøe, founder of Haldor Topsøe A/S.
