CHF and AAAS Co-Host “The Rise of Technological Medicine: Consequences for Patients, Doctors and Health Care Reform” on October 7

The seminar will be given by Stanley Reiser, M.D., Ph.D.

PHILADELPHIA, PA—5 October 2009The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) will co-host the symposium “The Rise of Technological Medicine: Consequences for Patients, Doctors and Health Care Reform”, on Wednesday, October 7 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.   This is a segment in a yearlong discussion about the history of contemporary policy.  Stanley Reiser, MD, PhD, clinical professor of health care sciences and health policy at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Science, will be the speaker.

Sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Archives and the Chemical Heritage Foundation’s Center for Contemporary History and Policy, the AAAS-CHF History Seminar is an informal forum on the social, institutional, and intellectual histories of contemporary policy problems that rely upon science and technology. Invited speakers will explore the historical genesis of a wide range of current policy topics, such as energy, environment, and health. The forum aims to engage scholars with scientists, policymakers, and members of the general public.

Stanley Reiser’s research and teaching have contributed to the development of four areas of study: medical ethics training, the application of technology assessment to health care, analyses of the role of values that guide policies and decision-making in health care organizations, and coordination of leaders in medicine and public health to improve national health care policy. He is the author of over 120 books and essays, and his most recent publication is Technological Medicine: The Changing World of Doctors and Patients.  Reiser received his medical degree from the State University of New York-Downstate Medical Center and his master’s and doctoral degrees from Harvard University.

“We’re very happy to have established this connection with an organization such as the AAAS,” said Jody Roberts, program manager for environmental history and policy at CHF.  “This series offers us an opportunity to engage new audiences as we further the mission of the Center for Contemporary History and Policy to bring new perspective on issues at the crux of science and society.”

To RSVP, contact Amy Crumpton (acrumpto@aaas.org or 202-326-6791). All seminars will be held in the Revelle Conference Room, 2nd floor, AAAS Headquarters, 1200 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20005. Light refreshments will be served.
