Chemical Heritage Foundation Hosts Innovation Day 2009

PHILADELPHIA, PA—22 September 2009The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) successfully hosted the sixth annual Innovation Day from 14 to 15 September, welcoming research and development professionals to its headquarters in Philadelphia.  The two-day symposium brought together young innovators and industry leaders to celebrate innovation in today’s chemical industry and seek solutions for tomorrow’s challenges.

Festivities included presentation of the Gordon E. Moore Medal to Emma Parmee, for her work on Januvia, and the Perkin Medal to Richard B. Silverman, for his work on Lyrica.  Symposium participants attended poster sessions as well as breakout sessions on topics ranging from sustainable chemistry and engineering to emerging global economies.  Opening plenary talks were given by John LaMattina, former president of R&D for Pfizer, and Michael C. Kerby, director of the Chemical Sciences Laboratory for ExxonMobil Corporate Strategic Research.  The closing plenary was delivered by Alex Pang, research director at the Institute for the Future.

"Innovation Day is about exchanging and debating the big ideas of innovation in the chemical industry, and it’s exciting to see what our speakers and attendees are finding in their work,” says Thomas R. Tritton, president and CEO of the Chemical Heritage Foundation.  “We had two days of excellent discussion opportunities that allowed young industrial chemists to take a step back from their day-to-day operations and contemplate how their work fits into the bigger picture."
