Today, most of us think of chemistry taking place in a lab under the direction of a scientist. But hundreds of years ago chemistry was practiced in the home, often under the purview of women. Join us as we examine the role of women in chemistry’s history over the course of three centuries, shedding light on the serious science involved in what has at times been scoffed at as “women’s work.”

Clarissa Dillon, historian, professional teacher, and researcher, will bring her unique insights on cooking, medicine, and daily life of the women of the 18th century, while guided tours of the museum will explore the 19th century. Talks will take place at 5:15, 6:15, and 7:15 p.m., with tours following each presentation.

We are also pleased to present a continuous screening of CHF’s brand-new multimedia project, The Catalyst Series: Women in Chemistry. Watch the adventures of eight leading women in chemistry—whose careers span the 20th century and beyond—and celebrate the common element that catalyzed their journeys: a life-changing, chance-taking, thrill-seeking love of science.
