We value books made many centuries ago as much for their artistry as for their words. Using examples of books from our collection, guest speaker Lesley Mitchell will demonstrate various methods of illustration and decorative arts used in books throughout history.

Lesley Mitchell makes paintings, prints, and artist’s books in her Philadelphia studio. Mitchell was trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as a printmaker and has taught printmaking and other works on paper classes at several regional institutions. She shows her work nationally and internationally. She began her explorations in the book arts about 15 years ago and finds that her books frequently teach her things even as she makes them. Marbled paper appears in her book pages and covers, as well as in her drawings and collages.

First Fridays are free and open to the public; no registration required!
